My Los Cabos Recs

cabomontage-51.jpg

By no stretch of the imagination is Los Cabos a far-flung destination. Between easy accessibility from the states to endless resort options in every price range, the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo on the southern tip of Baja Sur together make for a popular tourist destination, one I'd venture to say many of you have been to before. But as with any hot spot, it’s popular for good reason! This being our first time to the area, I'm not going to pretend I’m a Los Cabos expert and write a detailed city guide or itinerary. What I will do though is fill you in on the restaurants I highly recommend from our visit, as well as the hotels that have my attention. More often than not, these quick suggestions I make live on my Instagram but don't make it to my site, which I plan to do a better job of including on here moving forward.

We had such a wonderful trip that I'm quite certain we will return at some point, so I’d love to hear any of your recommendations for the next time we visit!

Where To Eat

COMAL - Hours after we landed we had dinner reservations at COMAL at Chileno Bay Resort and it was quite the Cabo introduction! A romantically moody setting paired with a traditional yet inventive menu makes COMAL a dream. I recommend ordering a variety of the shareable plates in order to try as many dishes and flavors possible. I can't recommend this oceanfront restaurant enough, and if you don't want to take my word for it, it was rated the #1 Best Restaurant in Los Cabos by USA Today.

Talay - If you get your fill of tacos and ceviche, book a table at Talay for a welcomed dinner departure. This "food truck" concept is an outdoor restaurant at Montage Los Cabos that "features authentic cuisine inspired by the street food of Thailand". The flavors are bold and the setting vibrant thanks to string lights, flickering candles and the bustling food truck kitchen in the heart of the space. It's casual and fun!

Agua - Located at the iconic One&Only Palmilla, this clifftop restaurant features a Mexican-Mediterranean menu. When you can start a meal with fresh burrata and end it with chocolate filled churros, and somehow it all works together, it's a great meal! And the ambiance is just as noteworthy, thanks to a romantic setting of lit parasols and cushioned banquettes overlooking the ocean. It's stunning!

Flora Farms and ACRE - No secret here - Flora Farms is a Cabo staple. This "25 acre organic working farm in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna" is home to an intimate yet lively farm-to-table restaurant that's more than worth the drive! Trust me, book a table! Be sure to order a wood-fired pizza (even if it's an appetizer for the table) and give yourself enough time to explore the small village of shops before or after your meal. If you're looking for a new discovery, try ACRE instead. It's located just a few minutes from Flora Farms and also offers a farm-to-table menu but in an elevated boho atmosphere.

Where To Stay

Montage Los Cabos - After much deliberation, Montage is where we decided to stay and couldn't have been happier with our decision! This oceanfront property, which was built in 2018, has an understated and luxe aesthetic. Situated in Santa Maria Bay, it is home to one of the few swimmable beaches in Cabo, has delicious restaurants and lounge worthy pools, but most of all, standout hospitality. In fact, it may be the best guest services we've ever had, which is no small feat. It's going to be very hard to persuade us to stay somewhere else if we ever return to Cabo!

Zadun, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve - We originally had a reservation booked at Zadun, but for a few reasons decided to switch, though I know it would have been a fabulous stay! Zadun opened its doors late 2019 to rave reviews, and what I love about it is the extra large outdoor living spaces which are natural extensions of the guest rooms and include plunge pools, fire pits and chaises. It's further removed from the action of Cabo, which can be a plus, and is the fourth Ritz-Carlton Reserve in the world (one-of-a-kind properties in truly special locations).

Paradero Todos Santos - If you follow the world of boutique hotels, you are going to start seeing a lot about Paradero Todos Santos, which just opened last month in the sleepy surf town of Todos Santos, an hour north of Cabo. This experience-based hotel considers itself on being a landscape project first and a hotel second, and has a bohemian aesthetic more in line with Tulum properties than Cabo. Having never been to Baja Sur, I was a bit hesitant to venture too far off the beaten path, especially traveling with our young daughter, but am extremely intrigued by this property.

Four Seasons Los Cabos - We seriously considered breaking our trip into two parts, with the second half spent on the peninsula's less-traveled east cape checking out the new exclusive Costa Palmas area. If you're searching for an undiscovered side to Cabo, full of modern glamour and endless exploration, this is the spot. The Four Seasons just opened and looks beautiful, but we ultimately decided to wait with hopes to visit once Aman opens its doors (scheduled for 2024). Amanvari will be the first Aman property in Mexico.

A note on when to visit: The end of February/beginning of March could not have been more perfect, both from a weather standpoint (temps were in the low 80's) to it being the height of whale watching season (runs Jan-March) which added an unexpected and special element to the trip. In fact, I can’t imagine ever visiting outside of whale season, it was that magical! With that said, this is peak season, so rates will be on the high end but worth it.
